Introduction
The District Council has the authority to issue Temporary Street Closure Orders for street fairs, markets, etc. under Section 21 of the Town Police Clauses Act 1847.
Procedure
- The applicant must write in to the Council's Legal and Admin Division giving details of the exact stretch of road they wish to close, the date and length of time and for what purpose (i.e. street fair, market, etc.).
- The Council will then consult the Traffic Management Section at Suffolk Constabulary and the Environment & Transport Section at Suffolk County Council.
- If the applicant is not the Town/Parish Council, then they are also consulted.
- It usually takes about 3-5 weeks for Suffolk County Council & Suffolk Constabulary to carry out all their necessary consultations and to send a formal response.
- Once Suffolk County Council & Suffolk Constabulary and the Town/Parish Council (if appropriate) confirm they have no objections, the Temporary Street Closure Order is produced incorporating any requested conditions.
- The Temporary Street Closure Order is then sealed and a copy sent to the applicant with a letter of confirmation.
- Copies of the Order are also sent to Suffolk County Council, Suffolk Constabulary, the County Fire Officer, the Town/Parish Council (if appropriate) and the Council's Waste Management Section for information.
