PUBLIC RIGHTS OF WAY

Summary

Information about how to move, create or stop a public right of way (footpath).

The Senior Administrative Officer (Footpaths) can advise on proposals to extinguish, divert or create public footpaths, bridleways and restricted byways within the Babergh District including those footpaths, bridleways and restricted byways which may require to be stopped-up or diverted as a result of proposed development under Town and Country Planning legislation.

If you wish to apply for a Public Path Order you may download and print off application forms for extinguishing (stopping up) (PDF, 58Kb), diverting (PDF, 60Kb) and creating (PDF, 58Kb) public footpaths, bridleways and restricted byways.

Please read the guidance notes (PDF, 11Kb) and complete the consent forms (PDF, 10Kb) prior to completing your application.  Please note that a plan to 1:2500 scale must accompany your application.

All applicants are strongly recommended to discuss their proposals with their local representative of the Ramblers Association (PDF, 10Kb).

Suffolk County Council carries out maintenance and signposting on existing rights of way and deals with reports of obstructions of rights of way.

The County Council also holds the Definitive Map (the legal record of all recorded public rights of way) and will advise on the position and status of routes.
