On September 26 Babergh District Council will be participating in the national Walk4Life campaign which looks to help and encourage people to get walking and to get all the health benefits from this free form of activity – one that everybody can participate in.

Over the last 18 months Babergh’s leisure and tourism staff have been promoting a range of organised walks and been taking steps to encourage people to take up this very accessible form of exercise.

Recent surveys have suggested that two of the main barriers to greater activity can be cost and finding the time. Walking is free and can easily be fitted into people’s daily routines.

Barbara Tottle, Babergh’s Health Walks Officer said that “all you need is a good pair of shoes and the health benefits are well established. People may not realise that walking regularly can reduce serious heart disease by up to 30%, it can help relive the symptoms of depression, boast self-esteem as well as a range of other benefits”.

Barbara Tottle added “making walking part of your regular routine can make a real difference to your life and your feelings of well being, this event could be the start for many people in gaining those benefits”.

Babergh’s event will take place on September 26 and starts out at 10.30am from the free car park at Dedham Mill. Registration starts at 10am. The event is totally free and the walk will be circular, taking in a short stop at Flatford Mill. Walkers will also be accompanied by a Blue Badge guide who will point out points of historical and cultural interest along the route.

The walk will be suitable for most people, although the route does take in “Kissings Gate” along the way. Further details can be obtained from Babergh’s web-site www.babergh.gov.uk following the links from the leisure pages marked ‘other activities’. To register in advance please call 01473 826622.
