Babergh District Council’s Playworker Kate Lowe is the best in the county – and now she has the award to prove it!

Kate beat off the competition and scooped the top prize of Playworker of the Year at the prestigious Suffolk Childcare Awards 2010, held at Trinity Park, Ipswich on June 23rd.

The awards recognise contributions that teams and individuals make to caring for children in Suffolk. The award was made by Simon White, director of Children and Young People Services for Suffolk County Council.

Part of the citation submitted, and which was read out last night, reads as follows:

Kate has created play opportunities where none existed before. In the summer holidays in 2009, over 2000 children and young people accessed 48 free events, three of which celebrated National Play Day.

Kate is a dedicated professional play worker who has established strong community links and is committed to providing a range of exciting, interesting play opportunities for children and young people in Babergh.

And Kate said: "I am thrilled to have received the Playworker of the Year 2010 award but was a bit bemused to be nominated as I am just doing my job!

“I am honoured that the work I have achieved has been recognised and that play has become so established within Suffolk.

“I am sincerely grateful to all my colleagues who have provided me with an enormous amount of support since I have been in post."

Tim Mutum, Babergh’s Project and Programme Executive, who nominated Kate for the award, added: “This award is recognition of the hard work and determination Kate has shown in this role.

“Her work has meant not only have young people and children been able to access play events and activities in Babergh where there was previously none but Kate has also been busy attracting nearly £200k worth of funding into the district too.

“She thoroughly deserves this award and Babergh is very proud.” ENDS
