A series of roadshows are being planned in the Babergh district to help tackle the problem of harmful drug use among younger people.

Babergh's Community Safety Partnership (CSP), which consists of a range of organisations including Babergh District Council,is organising a series of events to coincide with National Drugs Week – which is being held from June 8th to 12th.

People turning up at the roadshows will be offered the chance to look at a wide range of information leaflets about drug and alcohol misuse, and professionals will be on hand to answer questions about the subject.

Julia Catterwell, Babergh's Substance Misuse Officer, said: "The aim of these road shows is to increase public confidence in, and to raise awareness of, the work being done locally to respond to people's concerns about drugs.

“This week will build upon the success and momentum generated by last year's National Tackling Drugs Days and is part of a wide range of other work currently being carried out by the partnership in schools and the wider community.”

Babergh is an area with relatively few problems associated with the use of illegal drugs – and the CSP is determined to keep it that way.

Paul Little, Babergh's Community Safety and Leisure Manager, said: "It is important, even in areas like Babergh, where the use of illegal drugs isn't as big an issue, awareness about the harm that drugs can do, is delivered in a clear way.

“That is why, along with the irresponsible use of alcohol, one of the key aims of the partnership is to reduce the harm done by both illegal and legal drugs.”

The awareness raising events  which are being planned in partnership with Suffolk Youth and Connexions Service and police Safer Neighbourhood Teams will cover a number of location throughout the district.

On Tuesday, June 9, between 7.30pm and 9pm, the road show will be with the Youth Bus in Magdalen Road car park, Hadleigh. On Thursday, June 11, between 9am and 2pm, it will be at Sudbury Market Square and later that day back to Magdalen Road Car Park in Hadleigh, between 7.30pm and 9pm. The week is rounded off on Friday, June 12th, between 1pm and 2pm at Holbrook High School. ENDS
