The Way Forward for Babergh

Summary

Information on action taken within the authority and in the wider community.

Action within the Local Authority:

  • Adoption of an Environmental Policy
  • Review of all strategies/policies/procedures to incorporate sustainability measures.
  • Adoption of a "Green" purchasing policy.
  • Raising staff awareness.
  • Undertaking of an environmental audit on selected issues, i.e. energy consumption, paper use, CO2 emissions.
  • Further development of waste minimisation and energy saving practices "in-house".
  • Examinations of other practical measures e.g. transport use & home working.

Action in the Wider Community:

  • Make information available to the public promoting LA21 ideals and initiatives.
  • Actively encourage local community participation by promotion of the Parish Appraisal Scheme.
  • Respond to invitations to attend public meetings, presentations to local groups, etc. wherever possible.
  • Develop an Award Scheme open to local groups or communities developing relevant projects.
  • Promote home energy conservation.
  • Promote waste minimisation and recycling.
  • Pursue funding for initiatives through local sponsorship.

The Council will continue to develop on the activity it has already undertaken. The Council links much of this work to existing statutory responsibility and service provision, and we recognise that the process of Local Agenda 21, far from being a specific issue to be pursued in isolation, impinges upon every action and operation of the Council. In this respect, we will attempt to consider the implications of sustainability in our fundamental roles of provider, enabler and regulator.
