Noises Off

Summary

Review of  New Wolsey Theatre's production of Noises Off
East Bergholt High School
19th February - Saturday 13th March 2010
New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich

It's the technical rehearsal for a touring production of Nothing On, a classic British Farce, and tempers amongst our company of theatrical troupers are fraying. The director has to juggle with simultaneous affairs, the leading lady cannot remember her lines and one of the actors is hitting the bottle. Open warfare breaks out backstage in Ashton under Lyme and by the time the tour reaches Stockton on Tees anything could go wrong.....and everything does!

This piece was a very fast and witty play. The company combined humour, clichés and wit to create a wonderful night out.

The piece was based on a cast of actors who were nowhere near ready to perform a play, and had only so many hours to do so. A director added dynamic to the piece, interjecting with stereotypical phrases and mannerisms, moving around the audience as if it was a dress rehearsal.

The first half consisted of the actors rehearsing and failing, with some gossip about the directors personal life. I felt that this half was the slowest, but from that point onwards, this farce was quick, snappy and brilliantly pulled off.

The set was cleverly put together. On one side, the interior of a country get-away, the other side, the backstage where mayhem took place.

This farce is an entertaining and excellent way to spend an evening, swearing and mild nudity in parts, suitable for 14+ I would recommend. If you like fast paced mayhem, skit type plays, Noises Off is definitely for you.
