Spyski!

Summary

Review of Spyski!

New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich

Psst... there's a new show at The New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich, but keep it quiet. Created by Peepolykus and written by Steven Canny and John Nicholson, Spyski! is the story of John, an actor whose only dream is to play Earnest in Oscar Wilde's "The Important of Being Earnest".  His dream is founded, and with the show on in two days he couldn't be better prepared - until food poisoning strikes and he is placed on a ward with a recently poisoned Russian spy, who entrusts him with the secret he is sworn to protect, turning John from actor to super spy!

Psst… there’s a new show at the New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich, but keep it quiet! Created by Peepolykus, and written by Steven Canny and John Nicholson, Spyski! Is the story of John, an actor whose only dream is to play Earnest in Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”. His dream is founded, and with the show on in two days he couldn’t be better prepared – until food poisoning strikes and he is placed on a ward with a recently poisoned Russian spy, who entrusts him with the secret he is sworn to protect, turning John from actor to super spy! The big question is can he complete his new mission, get back to rehearsals and not be killed… all before opening night?!

With only five cast members, this fast-paced, witty story seems impossible to perform, but they pull it off. It is incredibly well rehearsed, with some scene changes happening so seamlessly and with such intelligence that you can’t believe it really happened that way. This, combined with a basic set consisting of the inside of a living room plus props, was actually incredibly versatile. The lighting and sound also play a role, helping swing the scenes along and keep changeovers smooth.

The part of John Nicholson really stood out for me – although the entire cast were hysterically funny, he really kept a pace to the comedy, meaning you were never bored between jokes.

Overall, I believe this play to be one of the best I have ever seen. It was tight, fast-paced and had me rolling in the aisles laughing! I was never bored and it was just the right length. Although some strong language makes it unsuitable for younger children, I would truly urge anyone with a sense of humour to grab a ticket before they’re all sold out – this show only runs until the 4th April!
