Little Shop of Horrors

Summary

11th September - 4th October

Dark and slightly scary, yet at the same time lively and hysterically funny, Little Shop of Horrors is a definite must-see for a fun-packed family night at the theatre.

11th September - 4th October

Little Shop of Horrors flew in from outer space in 1982 and devoured all preconceptions of musical theatre.

Now in its third decade, it has landed at The New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich.

This laugh-a-minute, rock 'n' roll extravaganza was last night performed by an exceptionally talented cast who, as well as providing interesting and witty onstage personas, also played the entire score from their balcony above 13 - 13 Skid Row; Mushnik's Flower Shop.

This is the workshop of hapless amateur botanist, Seymour, the ditsy-yet-vulnerable shop assistant Audrey and their grumpy, geriatric boss, Mr. Mushnik. The bulk of the action takes place here, centred around Seymour's latest horticultural find, Audrey II.

This sci-fi B-movie-turned-stage show has gathered a cult following, and for good reason.

How often do you get the chance to watch an alien plant grow on stage? See a semi-sadist, motorcycle-riding, dentist dose up on laughing gas or view an elderly Jewish flower shop owner dancing with his conveniently adopted son, just to save his business?

The entire cast gave an empowering performance, with the combined talents of Jo Servi (Voice) and Dominic Eddington (Plant Manipulation) standing out in my mind. Their control and characterisation of Audrey II created a realistic and memorable giant, green extra-terrestrial plant - with the most enormous lips!

Although the music can be overpowering at times, the story is carried through with an excitement and vigour rarely seen in theatre, proving above all else that the actors enjoy doing what they do, and that in turn contributes to the soul of the show.

Dark and slightly scary, yet at the same time lively and hysterically funny, Little Shop of Horrors is a definite must-see for a fun-packed family night at the theatre.

And remember.........

Don 't Feed The Plants!!!
