Horrible weather and miserable forecasts are coming our way (financial as well as meteorological!) but the New Wolsey are certainly keeping spirits up with Cinderella the Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto. Even grumpy teenagers like myself couldn’t help but laugh out loud and hum along to the songs. We all of course, know the story of Cinderella, that’s what I was thinking when I went in, but after looking at the programme I was surprised to see that there have been many versions of Cinderella. The original version actually comes from ancient China! Anyway let’s look at the show itself before I end up writing a history essay.
It may be just because I haven’t seen a panto for a good old while but Cinderella really was superb, it was classic pantomime complete with the corny jokes, slapstick comedy and the all to familiar “He’s behind you!” moments. Being a great fan of Looney Tunes my favourite thing about the show had to be the sound effects added in, especially when they get bonked on the head, complete with twittering birds as they stumble around with their eyes crossed. Technically, speaking the actors who were also their own musicians were outstanding. Cinderella was played by Sarah Scowen, making her first appearance in a pantomime (she could have fooled me!), Mark Stanford as Prince Charming, Adam Baxter as Buttons, Kieran Cunningham as Baron Hardup, the mayor of Ipswich and Esther Biddle as Rubella de Zees *Cue jarring chord and screaming*. The company made full use of lights, sound, music and set.
Overall, a fantastic show, I really recommend it for adults and kids alike; you’ll love it, even if you end up with an ugly sister on your knee like my brother did!
Oh and if you are anywhere near the front you might want an umbrella!
