Do not think for a minute that it lives up to its name of A Chorus of Disapproval. This sell-out show will have you laughing hard at least once-a-minute! Showing at the New Wolsey, Mercury and Watford Palace, the Mercury theatre cast really brings the show to life.
The story follows a young man who joins an amateur theatre company. He soon discovers that what happens on stage is nothing compared to what goes on behind the curtains! The play does not lack a good dose of seduction, fighting, romance, jealousy and the odd affair.
The lack of music was more than made up for by an occasional song, sung in chorus or solos, and the common chit-chat in various scenes. The clever lighting also summed up any small amateur theatre or an 80’s living room. However, there were odd times when some of the dialogue was unclear, maybe because of the Welsh accents or under par acoustics. Despite this, the show was a joy to watch, especially the fight over mustard coloured underpants!
The huge changing set was brilliant; it helped make every scene easier to imagine so you could focus more on the acting, not imagining the surroundings. Including a full bar with real drinks and outdoor patios with garden chairs, it’s like the 80’s just jumped on stage!
A realistic view of the good old British theatres brought to life in a brilliantly acted and directed show. Although written in the mid-eighties, the jokes are still relevant today which does mean anyone too young may want to miss this- most will go over their heads and the show runs for nearly three hours. A fantastic evening out and a must see show.
