Following the success of the Enterprise Day last year, Babergh held a second event – Who Wants to be an Entrepreneur 2 - on Wednesday 17th November at the Stoke by Nayland Club. This event provided further opportunities for young people to develop life skills, learn about entrepreneurship and the expertise needed to create a successful sustainable business

Team Business Ltd ran a business simulation called BOX and during the day the youngsters had a chance to run their own business, facing challenges that all businesses have to face. 20 teams were in competition to run their own companies and their level of success was based on the business decisions they made and on how well team members interacted with one another.

Babergh reached an even greater number of young people this year and 100 representatives from middle, high, special schools and youth organisations attended the event. Over 30 local businesses were approached in regard to supporting the event. Many of these companies will be hosting a visit from the young people so they can observe how their business works and how their products are manufactured.

The prize for the winning team, who made the most profit on the day, was offered by ITFC Charitable Trust and six worthy winners from different schools had the opportunity to watch Ipswich Town play from the luxury of an Executive Directors Box.

The most entrepreneurial student of the day was George Cox from Uplands Middle School who received a silver plate sponsored by Hadleigh Castings. The company also sponsored a winners shield which was received by Uplands Middle School. Kate Edwards from Stoke by Nayland Middle School won the second prize offered by Hollow Trees Farm Shop. Kate spent the day at the farm shop developing a gift box to be sold with their current hamper range and had a real hands-on experience of what working for a company is all about.

The event was again held during Global Entrepreneurship Week and Jill Barton, Babergh’s Community Development Officer, commented: “The day was fantastic – it was great to see the young people interacting within their team in an endeavour to make the most profit and win first prize”! We understand the importance of helping our young people gain knowledge and understanding of the business world and the various work opportunities this can bring. It is equally important to our local companies to be able to transfer skills and knowledge to new generations in order to build future growth and prosperity. Babergh is leading the way on promoting an exciting new partnership opportunity between the Council, its schools and the local businesses.”
