How to set up a direct debit to pay your Council Tax or Business rates.

Council Tax

Direct DebitDirect Debits for Council Tax can be set up for a variety of dates. Most people pay on the 1st but if that date is inconvenient you can choose from the 8th, 15th, 22nd or 28th of each month.

Business Rates

Direct Debit for Non-Domestic rates can only be set up for the 1st of each month.

How to set up your direct debit payments

It’s easy to make the change. You can either:

  • Telephone us on 01473 825798 and we will set the Direct Debit up there and then.  We tell you what you will pay, when the first payment will be collected and confirm those details in writing within 3 working days
  • Click for a downloadable Council Tax Direct Debit Mandate Form  (pdf, 52kb) or downloadable Business Rates Direct Debit Mandate Form  (pdf, 50kb), 
  • Complete the details and send it to us, or
  • Once we have the form back here we will set the instruction up and confirm your payments and payment dates in writing.

The Direct Debit Guarantee

  • All Banks and Building Societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme offer this Guarantee. The efficiency and security of the scheme is monitored and protected by your own Bank or Building Society.
  • If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change Babergh District Council will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.
  • If an error is made by Babergh District Council or your Bank or Building Society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.
  • You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your Bank or Building Society. Please also send a copy of your letter to us.
